Högertrafikomläggningen

Högertrafikomläggningen

Info: For today’s blog post, I will be retelling the events of Dagen H as if they that happened today.  I will additionally use Tweets and memes to make my narration more entertaining.  The H in Dagen-H stands for Högertrafikomläggningen, which is Swedish and translates to right hand traffic diversion.

Today Sunday, September 3, 1967, Sweden started driving on the right-hand side instead of the left.  This is definitely a very controversial topic; but regardless of people’s thoughts on the decision itself, I am sure Dagen-H, H-Day in English, will go down as one of the greatest and most entertaining historical events of all time.  I can only imagine what everyone on their way to work was thinking:

Because all of Sweden’s neighbors drive on the right, they decided it would be a good idea to finally do the same.  I think we all know the meme that suites this situation perfectly.

Although the Swedish themselves don’t strike me as the most reasonable group of people due to 83% of them voting to continue driving on the left, I do respect their government for finally forcing them to drive on the right side of the road.  The switch however, could have gone a little more smoothly though if you ask me.  The government must have been thinking something like:

Thanks to the government’s planning capabilities, 157 accidents have already been reported today and over 30 people have been injured, some of them seriously.  But why don’t we just check what Twitter has to say about all of this.

While some Nations were up in arms about Swedens’ decision….

Others were quite pleased to see that Sweden finally figured out what side of the road you are supposed to drive on.

As you can see based on these tweets,  the entire world feels very strongly about this matter.  And believe it or not a lot has gone into make Dagen-H happen.  I mean for gods sake they printed a Dagen-H Logo on milk cartons and underwear to make people talk about it.  Just picture it for a minute.

Overall I can say that today has been a crazy day and that this whole Dagen-H business has been one messy, but truly funny, event to follow.  I conclude that it is probably the most underrated day in history and that more people need to know about it.  When reading articles in class like “In Public: The Shifting Consequences of Twitter Scholarship” by Bonnie Stewart I definitely learned a lot about how crazy twitter can be.  While I was just having some fun creating fake tweets for this blog post, I have come to understand that some people do indeed use Twitter to say things that might belong on a comedic blog post about Dagen-H rather than on their Twitter Page.

Signing off,
